mary's story... I was re-introduced to rock 'n' roll dancing in 1993 - I had danced in my teenage years, but had let it lapse... I immediately re-developed my "love affair" with this most enjoyable pastime... So much so, that as my dancing skills and enjoyment increased over the next few years, I started entering a few dance competitions... Much to my surprise and delight, I was placed in a few competitions - and then even winning an occasional event...    and I made the finals of the Victorian State Rock 'n' Roll Championships in 1997... Amongst other things, rock 'n' roll is very much a "visual" experience for the audience, and the clothing worn by competitors is part and parcel of the enjoyment experienced by the competitors and shared with the audience... However, being divorced and therefor a single mother bringing up three kids, meant that I was unable at that time to afford to buy suitable rock 'n' roll competition clothes... I had scraped together enough money to buy a second-hand sewing machine a few years previously to make clothes for my kids - and had taught myself through trial and error to be quite competent... My need to make rock 'n' roll competition clothes meant I also now had a new use for my trusty old sewing machine... Fortunately, I have a naturally good eye for design - along with a special affinity for the style of clothes worn from the 1920's through to the early 1960's. and in particular the 1950's... I started making my own competition clothes - and those of my then dancing partner...       and the compliments for the clothes I was designing and making - started flowing in... I met my partner Ray Harris in 1997 (in life, and now in dancing) - Ray had never danced before - not in rock 'n' roll or any other type of dancing... I was delighted when Ray also quickly developed the same "love affair" with rock 'n' roll that I had a few years before... We danced our first competition together three months later in mid 1997, achieving a second placing...       Our success on the dance floor also meant that Ray and I needed an increasing number of competition outfits...    I had already been receiving quite a lot of requests from other dancers and competitors to design and make rock 'n' roll, lindy hop & swing outfits for them...      Additionally, the "word was getting around" - and the number of requests I was receiving to design & make dance clothes was steadily increasing... It was clear that people were responding very positively to my designs and to the way I "finished off" the clothes I made for them - so I decided to go into business for myself... Ray & I then established gorgeous rock 'n' swing gear in Melbourne, Australia on 1 November, 1999, & "gorgeous" went online 23 november 1999... Because of the phenominal growth of gorgeous, we found it increasingly difficult to devote the time & effort required for competing... As a result, we retired from competitive dancing after achieving over 70 competition & championship placings from just under 80 "starts", including over 50 first placings...
